The opening college football odds for this game show that the Miami Hurricanes are 14 point favorites. That number has dropped to 13 points at many offshore sportsbooks although over 75% of the early betting money from the public is on the Canes. This is a sign that smart money is on the Virginia Cavaliers.
Last week my college football lock of the week was on Miami over Georgia Tech. I have followed the Canes closely and it has been very profitable. Miami coach Al Golden has done an excellent job of getting the Hurricanes to focus on football after a sluggish start to the season, marred with off-the-field-controversy, but he will be hard pressed to get this team to get excited about a game against the Cavs.
Virginia still needs two wins to be bowl eligible and they have the same record as Miami. They defeated the Hurricanes last year and so they enter this game with plenty of confidence. Virginia employs a two man quarterback system with sophomore Michael Rocco and freshman David Watford getting a chance. Both quarterbacks looked dreadful against the Wolfpack, but look for a rebound against the Canes.
The Hurricanes are in a tough spot as far as the college football betting trends are concerned. The Hurricanes are 16-40-1 against the spread (ATS) in their last 57 games as a home favorite, 9-25-1 ATS in their last 35 games as a home favorite of 10.5 or greater, and 5-14 ATS in their last 19 home games against a team with a winning road record.
The underdog is 6-1 ATS in the last seven meetings and the Cavaliers will keep this game very close.
