Even in the preseason this game is worthy of the hype. The Colts went to the Super bowl last year and fell just short, losing to the New Orleans Saints. The Packers are an up and coming team and front runners in the race for a Super bowl title. The preseason will provide a good measuring stick for each team.
The Packers have looked great on offense but still have to address issues in the running game.
On defense the Packers have struggled, as they gave up over 20 points in each game and the secondary has been a weak point. Playing against Peyton Manning and the Colts will provide a much needed challenge for this team.
The Colts have never been concerned with winning in the preseason. Last year they coasted through the preseason and finished with a record of 1-3. The main goal is to enter the regular season with a healthy team and focus on grabbing the Lombardi Trophy. The Colts are still experiencing problems on the offensive line and the last thing they want to do is to get Manning hurt. Before the preseason even started the Colts were in need of two guards on the line. Now they need two new guards and short-term replacements for center Jeff Saturday and tackle Charlie Johnson. Manning will get some time to adjust to the makeshift line in this game.
With all of those troubles, it has been announced that the Colts will play several starters, including Manning into the third quarter. Look for the Colts to run a quick strike offense to keep Manning out of harm’s way. When asked about playing in Green Bay Manning admitted, albeit preseason, this game was important. “I think it’ll be a great test for everybody,” Manning said. “Green Bay has great crowds no matter what the situation is. We have a lot of our games early in the season, including the opener, on the road. …I think we’ll face a lot of situations in this game — dealing with crowd noise, working against a number of different defenses.”
Curtis Painter will take over at quarterback after Manning, and he looked magnificent in his performance in Buffalo.
The Colts know that if they win this game it can help them prepare for the regular season, as they open on the road against the Texans.
Prediction and Pick:
The Packers have had some issues in the secondary in the preseason. The defensive coaching staff is playing it safe with superstars Charles Woodson and Al Harris, and playing them sparingly to prevent injury. The result is giving younger players a chance to impress. The Packers are very thin at running back, and while Aaron Rodgers is the strength of this team, the running game should be featured in this game on Thursday.
The Colts don’t always care about winning in the preseason but they are approaching this game with a different mindset. They will prepare like the regular season has started. They realize that the season starts with a tough road game in Houston and they will use this game to prepare for a hostile environment. Manning will play at least the first half and Painter looked much more comfortable in the backup role. The Colts keep this win close and win late.
This may be a preseason game, but it offers a great matchup between two teams that have a chance of going all the way in 2010-2011.
